Subscription checker: find every subscription on your card
The quickest free subscription checker is your last 12 months of card statements, read alongside the subscription lists in Apple, Google Play and PayPal. Together they show almost every recurring charge you pay, including the ones billed once a year. This guide walks through each check in order and shows how to turn what you find into a list that reminds you before the next charge.
What a subscription checker actually does
A subscription checker answers three questions: what am I paying for, who bills me, and when is the next charge. Some apps get those answers by connecting to your bank account. You can get the same answers without handing over a bank login, using records you already have.
You need a full year, not just last month, because many subscriptions bill annually: storage, password managers, Prime, antivirus and news sites. A one-month scan misses them, and they are the ones that catch people out.
How to check your subscriptions for free, step by step
1. Download 12 months of card statements
Download statements for every debit and credit card in the household from your banking app or website, as PDF or CSV. Include cards you rarely use: a free trial is often started on an old card and forgotten.
2. Mark every charge that repeats
Go through each statement and mark anything that appears more than once at a similar amount, plus any single charge from a company you know sells subscriptions. Look out for:
- Small round amounts such as £4.99, £9.99 or US$19.99 a month.
- App store lines. A charge from Apple or Google Play can stand for several different subscriptions, so it needs a second check (step 3).
- Payment companies. A PayPal line hides the actual merchant (step 4).
- Price rises. The same merchant at a higher amount than last year usually means a renewal at a new price.
3. Open your Apple and Google Play subscription lists
Subscriptions bought inside an app are billed by the app store, not the provider, and they are cancelled there too.
- iPhone or iPad: Settings › your name › Subscriptions.
- Mac: App Store › your name › Subscriptions.
- Android or a browser: Apple subscriptions are at account.apple.com.
- Google Play: Play Store › profile picture › Payments & subscriptions › Subscriptions.
Apple’s subscription list only shows the Apple Account you are signed in to. If a receipt names another account, sign in with that one. You cannot see or cancel a family member’s subscriptions.
4. Check PayPal
On the PayPal website go to Settings › Payments › Manage automatic payments (UK accounts). The menu may also say Subscriptions and saved businesses, or Automatic Payments. In the app, open Menu › Subscriptions or Linked Businesses. Each merchant listed there can charge you without asking each time.
5. Search your inbox
Search your email for words like receipt, subscription, renewal, your trial, invoice from Apple and payment confirmation. This catches subscriptions paid on a card you did not check, and trials that have not charged yet.
6. Write it all down in one place
For each subscription, note the name, the amount, monthly or yearly, the next charge date, who in the household uses it and who bills it (the provider, Apple, Google Play, PayPal, Amazon or a mobile or broadband deal). Who bills it matters most: that is where the cancel button lives.
Using Subcentre as your subscription checker
Subcentre does steps 1 to 6 with you, without asking for a bank login.
- Scan a statement. Upload a bank or card statement and Subcentre helps you list the subscriptions on it.
- Forward receipts. Set one forwarding rule in Gmail, Outlook or iCloud. Receipts, trial confirmations and price notices then go to your household’s own Subcentre address and file themselves, with an Undo if one is wrong. Subcentre never reads your mailbox, only what you forward.
- Add anything by hand, such as a gym, a magazine or a subscription a relative pays.
Once your subscriptions are in, you see your monthly cost by category, who pays for what across the family, and price rises over time. Trial endings, notice deadlines, annual bills and big renewals reach you by email or as a notification, days before the money leaves. When something has to go, each subscription links to a step-by-step cancel guide for the common providers.
Free subscription checker vs a bank-connected app
| Do it yourself | Bank-connected apps (in general) | Subcentre | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needs your bank login | No | Usually | No |
| Finds yearly subscriptions | Only if you check 12 months | Depends on history | From a statement or receipt you add |
| Finds app-store subscriptions by name | Yes, in Apple and Google lists | Often shows only Apple or Google | Yes, from forwarded receipts |
| Reminds you before renewals | No | Varies | Yes, by email or notification |
After the check: what to do with each subscription
- Keep it. Note the renewal date so a price rise does not surprise you.
- Downgrade it. Many services have a cheaper tier or a free plan. The Subcentre cancel guides list a Pause or downgrade instead option where one exists.
- Cancel it. Cancel with whoever bills you, keep the confirmation email, and check the next statement once. See how to cancel all your subscriptions at once for doing several in one sitting.
Questions about checking your subscriptions
Is there a free subscription checker?
Yes. Your card statements, the Apple and Google Play subscription lists and your PayPal automatic payments are all free to check and cover most subscriptions between them. Subcentre puts them in one list without asking for a bank login.
How do I check what subscriptions I have on my phone?
On an iPhone go to Settings, your name, Subscriptions. On Android open the Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, Subscriptions. These lists only cover app-store billing. Subscriptions you pay directly on a website appear on your card statement instead.
Does Subcentre connect to my bank?
No. Subscriptions come from statements you scan, receipts you forward to your private Subcentre address, or details you type in.
Can a subscription checker find yearly subscriptions?
Only if it looks back far enough. Check 12 months of statements, or forward the last renewal receipt. Once a yearly subscription is in Subcentre, you are reminded before it renews.
Can Subcentre cancel subscriptions for me?
No. Cancelling happens with whoever bills you. Subcentre tells you who that is, reminds you before the deadline, and links to step-by-step cancel guides compiled from the providers’ own help pages.
How often should I check my subscriptions?
A full check once a year, plus a quick look whenever a free trial starts. With reminders set, you only need to act when a trial is ending or a renewal is near.
