How to cancel HBO Max
HBO Max is a streaming TV subscription, typically £4.99 a month (Basic with Ads). Here is where the cancel button lives, what you keep and lose, and what to check before and after.
Max went back to its old name, HBO Max, in 2025. In the UK, Standard with Ads is £5.99, Standard £9.99 and Premium £14.99 a month; US plans cost more.
Steps
- Sign in at hbomax.com and open your profile, then Subscription
- Choose Manage Subscription, then Cancel Subscription
- Confirm the cancellation
Cancelling through an app store or a bundle
The steps above are for a subscription taken out with HBO Max directly. If the charge on your statement comes from Apple, Google, Amazon or another company, that company holds the subscription and the cancel button is there.
If you pay through Apple
If you subscribed inside the app on an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV, Apple bills you and the HBO Max website cannot cancel it: use Settings, your name, Subscriptions.
If you pay through Google Play
If the charge comes from Google Play, cancel in the Play Store under your profile, Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
If you pay through Amazon
In the US, HBO Max is sold as a Prime Video Channel. In that case go to Memberships and Subscriptions in your Amazon account, find the channel and cancel it there; the HBO Max site will not show a cancel option.
Other ways you may be billed
In the UK, most Sky TV customers and NOW Entertainment members have HBO Max Basic with Ads included, so there is nothing to cancel separately; it ends with the Sky or NOW subscription. In the US it is often part of a Disney+ and Hulu bundle or included with a cable or phone plan, and is cancelled with whoever bills you.
What happens when you cancel
Cancelling stops the next charge and leaves access in place until the end of the period you have paid for. Downloads stop playing when access ends. Your profiles and watch history stay on the account if you come back.
Pause or downgrade instead
There is no pause. You can switch to a cheaper plan with adverts from the Subscription page, which applies from the next renewal.
Refunds
HBO Max does not refund partial months or the unused part of an annual plan; cancelling an annual plan stops the renewal and the year runs to its end. If you are charged after cancelling, the confirmation email is your evidence when you ask for the money back.
Before you cancel
- The service has changed name twice, from HBO Max to Max in 2023 and back to HBO Max in 2025, so the app on your phone may not match the name on your statement. Find out who bills you first: HBO Max, Apple, Google, Amazon, Sky or NOW. An annual plan charges a full year at once on renewal.
- Check the renewal date and any notice deadline first. Complete cancellation before that deadline and check the confirmed access end date.
After you cancel
- Keep the confirmation email. If a charge appears later, it is your proof.
- Access normally continues until the end of the paid period, then stops.
- Check the next card statement once, to be sure the charge is gone.
In the UK
HBO Max launched as its own service in the UK and Ireland on 26 March 2026, from £4.99 a month for Basic with Ads. Before that, HBO programmes in the UK were only on Sky and NOW, which still carry them.
Questions about cancelling HBO Max
How do I cancel HBO Max on Amazon?
Go to Memberships and Subscriptions in your Amazon account, find the HBO Max channel and cancel it there. Cancelling in the HBO Max app has no effect on an Amazon channel.
Is Max the same as HBO Max?
Yes. The service was renamed Max in 2023 and went back to HBO Max in 2025; the account and subscription are the same.
Can I get a refund on an HBO Max annual plan?
Normally not. Cancelling stops the renewal, and the year you paid for runs to its end.
I have Sky; do I need to cancel HBO Max?
Not if it came with Sky TV or NOW Entertainment. Only a plan you upgraded or bought yourself has a separate charge to cancel.
